ASUS could be releasing its new smartwatch next month to complement its current ZenFone 3 smartphone series. For its 3rd attempt, ASUS appears to be going for a circular display which is becoming a popular form factor for Android Wear.
The round display is confirmed via a leak from China’s National Communications Commission. It shows a rather thick watch case with 3 buttons on the right. Over at the back, it has 2 pins for charging which attaches to a circular dock that’s connected via USB.
For personalisation, the watch bands are detachable and it seems that you’re able to swap them without using tools. There’s no info on the hardware but you can expect it to run on the latest Android Wear 2.0 that was announced at Google I/O. This would offer independent watch apps, improved fitness tracking, and better watch face customisation.
Looking at the trend, most new smartwatches will likely get a round display instead of a square unit. We’ve seen some fine examples from LG, Huawei, Motorola and even Samsung. With IFA 2016 happening in Berlin next month, there’s a high chance that ASUS will be introducing the ZenWatch 3 there. After all, the first ZenWatch was introduced at Berlin almost exactly 2 years ago. Apart from ASUS, Samsung could be releasing their new smartwatch as well.
