U Mobile has finally launched U10 Plan, its first supplementary plan add-on for post paid users. In its typical late fashion, it took U Mobile nearly a year to launch this since its postpaid service launch.

The U10 Supplementary plan comes with a RM10/month access fee and the call rates are 18 sen/minute for on net (same network) and 30 sen/minute for off net calls (other network). SMS are charged at 5 sen/SMS for on net and 15 sen/SMS for off net. As usual, all calls are charged on per second billing block basis. A postpaid customer can apply up to a maximum of 4 supplimentary lines.

The key selling point for U Mobile’s U10 is the ability to share credit of the principal line. In addition, they are giving 1 month free commitment & access fee for all combined lines for every 1 year subscription. If that sounds complicated to you, they are giving 50% off of the total principal monthly commitment and sub lines access fee every 6 months which translates to 1 month free for the whole year period.

Supplement Comparison with DiGi

The closest comparison would be DiGi’s Family Basic Supplementary Plan which also charges RM10/month for access fee. DiGi’s Family basic charges 15 sen/minute for on net and 30 sen/minute for off net. SMS rates are similar to U10′s offering.

The difference is that Family Basic calls are charged at 12 sen billing block which is quite acceptable and they also offer 35% off on calls/sms made to its principal and other linked supplementary lines. On top of that, there’s a monthly auto savings & group auto savings scheme that could waive the access fee depending on usage.

Alternatively, DiGi also has 1 Family Supplementary Plan with a commitment of RM30/month which offers Free Calls between principal and supplementary lines.

Our thoughts

U Mobile’s U10 is nothing to shout about when compared to its rival DiGi’s offering. Without comparing, we believe Maxis and Celcom’s 5+1 would be more attractive.

As supplementary lines are often targeting family households, it is obvious that calls between lines had to be given some special treatment. However we puzzled that U Mobile didn’t offer any special rate or free calls to its linked principal and supplementary lines. What was U Mobile thinking when they plan this supplementary plan? Perhaps they target broken families who don’t talk to each other, we never know.
