Barely a year since launch, Tune Talk has announced its 1 million subscriber base. Quite an impressive feat considering it is a young MVNO. They have even created a cheap looking ad citing the lack of funds as they’ve focus their efforts and expenditure in creating the best low cost mobile operator.

In conjunction with this milestone, TuneTalk is offering FREE calls which we believed is free only within TuneTalk network as announced over twitter. TuneTalk is also running a contest that gives free trip to London for 2 for the highest top up user.

TuneTalk, the latest venture by Tune Group is finally revealed as the Brand New Mobile Prepaid. This is another (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) MVNO which uses Celcom’s wide coverage network.

The key highlights of Tune Talk are:

  • Top 10 Spenders of the day will be given RM200 AirAsia E-Vouchers
    This is an ongoing reward starting from 25th August

  • FREE RM100,000 PA Insurance underwritten by Etiqa
    To stay covered, just stay valid by topping up RM30 a month. No extra fee or cost required.
  • FREE Tune Talk credit for renewal vehicle Insurance
    MotorTakaful, the motor insurance arm of Etiqa will reward 5% of your vehicle insurance premium as credit when you renew.
  • Change your mobile number anytime!
    We don’t see the need for people to change numbers but this gives you the option to switch if you need to run away from annoying stalkers.

Rates

Tune Talk claims super low rates but we beg to differ. Tune Talk charges the same rate to all domestic networks at 22 sen/minute for calls and 5 sen/SMS. International rates are claimed to be lower than the competition and International SMS are charged at a fix rate of 20sen/minute.

It is also mentioned that all calls are charged on 60 seconds block which isn’t an efficient in bill charging. As mentioned before on 60 seconds billing block, this simply means a good 5 second “Hello, I’ve reached home” will be charged as full minute at 22 sen.

Compared to other prepaids in the market, TuneTalk rates aren’t competitive enough and the big blocky 60 seconds block is quite a turn off. However it looks like TuneTalk will try to justify the higher rate with its unique benefits with its partners such as Etiqa and AirAsia.
