Tonight Samsung will unveil its latest Galaxy Tab family member which comes in 8.9″. This places it in between its current 7″ and 10″ tablets that have been announced so far.
Ahead of the big event, the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 has been leaked and it appears to be thinner than the iPad 2 at only 8.6mm! The iPad 2 thickness is 8.8mm while the original 7″ Galaxy Tab is at 11.98mm.
Weight wise, it is at 470 grams making it 90 grams more than the 7″ version and the screen supports a higher resolution of 1280×800. Processor wise, it is powered by a dual-core 1GHz CPU.
More details at PocketNow.

This year the tablet wars are heating up with entrants from RIM (BlackBerry Playbook), Android (in the shape of the very capable Motorola Xoom) and of course, who can ignore the iPad 2.
A while back, one of the earliest Android tablets to hit the market comes from Samsung in the form of the Galaxy Tab which was launched in Malaysia together with Maxis. Earlier on, we had a brief hands-on experience with the Galaxy Tab at the launch roadshow but recently Samsung had given us the opportunity to test the device out more extensively.
After having the device for an extended period, we are able to share with you our findings on how is it like living with a Galaxy Tab on a day-to-day basis.

Samsung is coming up with a 8.9 in version the latest Galaxy Tab and this is a teaser picture of the new device posted earlier on Samsung Mobile’s official Facebook page.
No details has been released except for what appears to be a 3.5mm headphone jack shown the picture and the 8.9 form factor clued in by the “78910″ numbers — original Tab was a 7-incher, the new Tab II is a 10.1-inch device, so in between is an 8.9-inch Tab.
Samsung will be unveiling the 8.9 Tab’s in a special episode of the Samsung Unpacked on March 22 at yet another mobile event in the US.

Maxis is doing another round of festive promos on devices with more discounts on selected phones. This promo however is tied with a 24 months contract with either a 3GB data plan or BIS Pro plan that comes with 3GB.
So what’s interesting on the offer? The Nokia N8 is now RM788 (usual RM999 with 24 months contract) while the Motorola Defy is now offered at RM888 (usual: RM999). The HTC Desire Z also sees a reduction to RM1388 (usual: RM1449).
BlackBerries are reduced with a slight reduction on its older Curve 8520 and Bold 9700 but the Torch is further reduced to RM1288 from its previous 24 months contract price of RM1399.
On the Windows Phone 7 line up, the HTC 7 Mozart is now offered at a much lower RM1188 (usual RM1499) while the larger HTC HD7 is offered at RM1388 (usual RM1699).

To sweeten the deal for Samsung Galaxy Tab, Maxis is offering an outright price of RM1999 (original RRP: RM2699) with any purchase of a Value Plus Plan and data plan. As comparison, the Galaxy Tab is offered on contract at RM1749 over 24 months and RM1849 over 12 months.

Verizon — a mobile telco in the US — is offering a US$100 refund for customers who have purchased the Samsung Galaxy Tab from them in the last 14 days.
The reason? Verizon has dropped the price of the popular Android tablet from US$599 to US$499, those who’ve purchased the device before the price cut get the difference back. This is great goodwill gesture from Verizon and we don’t think we’ll be seeing something similar done here, but if the local operators are reading this, something for you to make a note of.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is one of better Android tablets in the market but in our hands it’s has some way to go to convince us to choose it over the iPad. In any case, the Samsung Galaxy Tab has its strengths and there is a market for it. We just hoping that Samsung Malaysia will loan a unit soon so we can really take the device through in paces.
In the meantime, we found this, a series of videos for the Samsung Galaxy Tab set along the theme of the popular sitcom The Office highlighting the device’s versatility.
We find them rather funny and we thought it’d make for some good lazy Sunday viewing.
Head on over the jump for the videos.

The 7″ Samsung Galaxy Tab has surpassed its 1 million units milestone. Launched just 2 months ago in over 64 countries, the achievement is impressive considering it goes head on with its bigger iPad rival. As comparison, Apple sold about 2 million units in 2 months time.
In Malaysia, we’re one of the first in the world to get it when it was launched on 21st October with Maxis as its exclusive telco. It is sold at RM2699 outright and from as low as RM1749 with a 24 months contract. Compared to the recent official iPad pricing in Malaysia, the Galaxy Tab is a tough choice to consider especially when one can get an iPad 3G 16GB for just RM1999 without contracts. We also won’t be expecting Dell to release their delayed Dell Streak in Malaysia anytime soon unless they plan to price it competitively against the iPad.
Don’t forget to check out our first impression of the Samsung Galaxy Tab here.

Singapore may be getting the Samsung Galaxy Tab a few weeks later than Malaysia but it sure is cheaper to get it there outright.
SingTel — the carrier offering the Galaxy Tab — have already put up a register of interest site to take in orders for the device that will be hitting stores on November 13.
Outright selling price for the Galaxy Tab is S$998 which roughly equates to RM2,388. As a comparison, Maxis sells the Tab for RM2,699 or about S$1,128. Ringgit for Ringgit that’s a savings of RM311.00 — a substantial amount if you happen to be in Singapore on launch day.
