The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has Gorilla Glass

Posted:  July 22, 2011   By: ccsoya   1 comment

For those of you that’s been been wondering if the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a Gorilla Glass strengthened display, here’s an official answer.

Corning has announced that their Gorilla Glass strengthened glass is featured on the Galaxy Tab 10.1

Here’s the official word:

GALAXY Tab 10.1 is recognized for its high-end technology and amazing design, even among industry experts. For the GALAXY Tab 10.1, Samsung Electronics searched for the most durable, scratch-resistant glass, and again found the perfect solution with Corning Gorilla Glass.

So now you know. But even so, don’t think everything with Gorilla Glass in unbreakable. Strengthened doesn’t mean invincible as this drop test reveals.

Still, its good to know that the soon to be launched in Malaysia Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is protected to some degree. But then again, can any tablet or smartphone afford not to have some sort of strengthened glass on its displays nowadays? We think not.

Samsung denies that it gave seal of approval for Anymode’s Smart Case

Posted:  July 19, 2011   By: ccsoya   1 comment

Remember the Anymode Smart Case that looked almost identical to Apple’s Smart Cover? Well it turns out that Samsung didn’t give the accessory “Designed for Samsung Mobile” seal of approval.

In a blog post, Samsung says that they are working with Anymode to address the oversight as to how the certification was attached to the look-alike cover designed specifically for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The blog post also states that the “product has never been sold” and “Samsung Electronics reviews and approves all accessories produced by partners.”

Interesting.

Smart Case for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 looks uncanily like Smart Cover for the iPad

Posted:  July 19, 2011   By: ccsoya   8 comments

Apple and Samsung have a very complicated relationship. Currently, the two tech giants are embroiled in a legal battle in which Apple claims Samsung is imitating “the appearance of Apple’s products to capitalize on Apple’s success”. Not to be outdone, Samsung is counter-suing Apple, who is also one of Samsung’s biggest customers, as Samsung manufactures A4 and A5 processors for Apple.

And things just got even more interesting with the unveiling of this — the Smart Case for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. At first glance, you’ll be forgiven to mistake the Smart Case for Apple’s Smart Cover for the iPad 2.

The Smart Case is manufactured by Anymode, one of Samsung’s unofficial, official accessories manufacturer and it looks like Samsung is endorsing the Smart Case, but it’s no big deal, because it doesn’t look like the Smart Case will be coming to Malaysia anytime soon.

What will be coming to Malaysia real soon is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. An official launch is expected within this couple of weeks. Stay Tuned!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Malaysia launch very close

Here’s probably one of the first pictures of the Malaysian edition of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 posted on a website, and if our sources are as reliable as we think they are, you can expect Samsung’s direct competitor to the iPad 2 to be launched within these couple of weeks — almost certainly before Ramadhan starts on July 30.

We have no confirmed pricing details yet but people in the know are telling us that it will “very competitive”, as in close to the pricing of the iPad 2 and attractive when compared to the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. A couple of weeks back, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was launched in Indonesia with an equivalent retail price of RM2,110. We doubt that the local RRP of the Tab 10.1 will be similar but it’s still possible.

We know a lot of people are holding out on their tablet purchase to see what this Honeycomb tablet from Samsung has to offer. Based on our first impressions of the the device, we can say that quality is top notch and we like the sleek design but because the unit we played with was loaded with a pre-release (read unfinished) OS, we can’t say much about the user interface, but the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has potential.

Another interesting point to note is that the local Galaxy Tab 10.1 could come with the keyboard case you see here but this is yet to be confirmed.

One more picture after the jump.

RUMOUR: Celcom first to offer Galaxy Tab 10.1?

Posted:  July 14, 2011   By: ccsoya   2 comments

We’ve just gotten this bit of very interesting information from a reliable source. It seems that Celcom will the be the first to offer the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Malaysia.

Our source is not telling us when this will happen and there’s no indication of pricing either, but we’re convinced that the tablet will hit local stores before this month draws to a close.

Last week, Indonesia became the first country in Asia to launch the Galaxy Tab 10.1. In Indonesia, the device retails for about RM2,110 without contract. Local pricing for the device will be “competitive” with the the current crop tablets available in Malaysia.

At the Indonesia launch, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 sold out in seven hours and it was reported that 4,000 people stood in line to purchase one.

When the Galaxy S II was launched here, there was great interest for the device as well. We noted that it was one of the most popular non-Apple smartphone in the market. On the same note, by our account, the Galaxy Tab 7 is still one of the most popular Android tablets in the market today and it looks like Samsung will have another winner in their stables with the Tab 10.1.

Indonesia, first Asian country to launch the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Sells out in 7 hours

Posted:  July 11, 2011   By: ccsoya   11 comments

Early last week Indonesia became the first country in Asia (possibly the world) to start selling the Honeycomb tablet that a lot of people are waiting for — the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. The introduction of Samsung’s latest tablet received tremendous response in the republic when it sold out in just seven hours.

Oddly enough after a strong lead-up to the launch of the device in Indonesia, only 1,200 units were available for purchase on day one. The rapid sale of the device was also spurred on by hefty introductory discounts offered by Samsung in conjunction with the launch.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 retails for Rp.6 million (or about RM2,110 at today’s rates) but was sold at Rp.4 million (about RM1,400) on the first day. In addition to that, the price of the first 200 units sold on launch day was reduced by another Rp.200,000 (about RM70).

News reports mentioned that approximately 4,000 customers waited in line, some overnight, to be amongst the first in Indonesia to purchase the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

For Samsung, the initial launch of a major product — in this case, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 — outside of the US and Korea is unprecedented. In Malaysia, we have word that the device will be officially launched towards the end of July. Though we have no information on local pricing, the Indonesian price could be a very good indicator to how much the device will sell here.

While the Galaxy Tab 10.1 may not be the first Honeycomb tablet to hit the local market, it is certainly the most anticipated. Even with the Motorola Xoom and the very competitively priced Asus Eee Pad Transformer both already selling here, many, based on the comments we’re been getting, are still holding onto their cash for the Samsung tablet.

VIDEO: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 official promo clip

Posted:  June 17, 2011   By: soyacincau   6 comments

Samsung has released an official promo clip on the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 which showcases its hardware specification and features. Those who are critical about size and weight, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is lighter and thinner than the iPad 2 with only 560g for the WiFi version and it is only 8.6mm thick.

As mentioned previously, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be available with Android 3.1 for both WiFi and 3G versions. This is a good thing considering other tablets like the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer has received the update.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is expected to be launched in Malaysia around next month and we’re curious to know how much will they priced this tablet. Both Acer and ASUS had shaken the Android tablet market in Malaysia with its pricing below RM2000 while the Motorola Xoom is still priced at a premium above RM2000. It is no brainer to why ASUS Eee Pad Transformer is one of the best selling Honeycomb tablet to date.

If Samsung wants to take a big slice in the tablet segment, we hope they consider their pricing very carefully.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to launch with latest Android 3.1

Posted:  May 25, 2011   By: soyacincau   3 comments

The ultra thin Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is now mentioned to be commercially available with the latest Android 3.1. This was spotted on Samsung US’s site ahead of its commercial launch. However there’s some confusion as Samsung has tweeted Android 3.0 instead over here. Not sure which one is making a mistake but we’re hopeful that it is definitely launching with the latest.

During the Galaxy Tab 10.1 unveiling, it was announced that US markets will be getting the device on 8th of June which is just a couple of weeks away. If they do decide to launch with the latest version, we hope this doesn’t delay their launch further. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 like the Galaxy S II has created the hype as the most anticipated Android devices to date. If they don’t launch soon enough, the competitors may just launch a counter product earlier to ruin the party.
