HTC One shown

One of the biggest issues we have with the HTC One is the lack of a microSD card slot. Granted, 32GB (or 64GB, depending on which variant you’re getting) is a lot of storage for most people and HTC has also included a two-year 25GB Dropbox storage for free, so there’s plenty of space to go around but having a microSD beats putting stuff in the cloud any day. Well if you’re like us and prefer a HTC One variant that comes with expandable memory then this could be could news for you.

HTC has just released a variant of the HTC One in Japan that sports a microSD card slot. The HTC J One looks virtually identical to the HTC One and comes with all the same features that we get here with the addition of a microSDXC slot that can support cards up to 64GB in size.

The HTC J One is currently a Japan only variant at the moment but its silly for the Taiwan company to keep it there. A HTC One with expandable memory would be almost perfect for Malaysia.

Couple of weeks back, we did a camera comparison of the latest flagship devices such as the HTC One, BlackBerry Z10, Nokia Lumia 920, iPhone 5 and Sony Xperia Z. With the Samsung Galaxy S4 being launched recently, it’s time for another round of camera shootout. This time we’ve thrown the Galaxy Note II in the mix as well.

Topping the megapixel count in this comparison are the 13MP shooters – Galaxy S4 and Xperia Z while the Lumia 920 8.7MP shooter shoots at 7.9MP. The iPhone 5, Galaxy Note II and the BlackBerry Z10 comes with the usual 8MP count. Of course not forgetting is the HTC One’s Ultrapixel camera which shoots an effective 4MP.

Without further ado, head after the break for the comparison. Let us know which you think is better?

The HTC One currently runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean which is a notch lower than the latest Android 4.2. As comparison, the Galaxy S4 already runs on Android 4.2.2 out of the box. If you’re itching for the latest, now word has it that HTC will be rolling out Android 4.2.2 update for the HTC One in 2-3 weeks time.

For older HTC devices such as HTC Butterfly, HTC One X, One S and One X+, a software update is expected to come soon which will bring HTC One’s BlinkFeed and Zoe as well. Software updates is a critical factor for smart phone ownership and it is good to see manufacturers giving existing loyal users the latest features.

UPDATE: Maxis’s HTC One page plans have gone public over here. Thanks @huaipoh for the alert!

The HTC One is currently available for bundling on all telcos except for Maxis. For those curious about Maxis’s offering, we got tipped off on its plans from one of our readers who managed to get some details from one of its centres. It is offered with its usual TalkMore or SurfMore plans and those entitled for SKMM RM200 rebate, it can be yours for just RM1,249.

The full bundled pricing as follows:

Value First/Value Plus + 1GB (24 months) – RM1,849
Value First/Value Plus + 3GB (24 months) – RM1,749

TalkMore28 + 1GB (24 months) – RM1,849
TalkMore78 + 3GB (12 months) – RM1,649
TalkMore78 + 3GB (24 months) – RM1,299

SurfMore50 (12 months) – RM1,919
SurfMore50 (24 months) – RM1,749
SurfMore75 (12 months) – RM1,849
SurfMore75 (24 months) – RM1,499

SKMM Offer TalkMore78 + 1GB (24 months) – RM1,249

As usual there’s a RM250 upfront payment required if you sign for 12 months contract while those signing up for 24 months would require RM1,000 as upfront payment. At the moment, stocks are not available yet which is probably the reason why Maxis has been holding up its plan until now.

Before we compare the Galaxy S4‘s camera capabilities, here’s the final leg of the camera shootout between the HTC One, BlackBerry Z10, Nokia Lumia 920, iPhone 5 and Sony Xperia Z. We have dropped the Xperia ZL from the comparison as it produces identical results as the Xperia Z.

To recap, the iPhone 5 and BlackBerry Z10 shoots a maximum of 8MP while the Sony Xperia Z/Zl shoots at 13MP. The Nokia Lumia 920′s shooter is rated at 8.7MP but captures images at 7.9MP as its maximum size in 4:3 aspect ratio. For HTC, its Ultrapixel camera which boasts bigger pixels shoots at a smaller 4MP resolution.

You can catch up our previous comparisons of the devices here:
Day time – Video

This time around, we’ve compared the HDR capabilities of the devices in the Suria KLCC and KLCC Twin Tower shots. Strangely for the Xperia Z, the HDR mode doesn’t seem to have any effect at all.

Following the release of its HTC One flagship model codenamed M7, they are now preparing to launch more models for the mid-range and entry level segment. The M4 pictured above is the alleged mid-range model which carries similar design and features but with its specification a notch lower.

The display would obviously be smaller with a more sensible 4.3″ display that pushes a respectable 720″ HD resolution at 342ppi. In terms of CPU, it runs on a dual-core processor but is mated with a generous 2GB of RAM which makes it no slouch.

There’s no word on the speakers but hopefully it also comes with a pair of front facing units like the ones found on its flagship model. Also included is its Ultrapixels camera but there’s no word on its pixel count. Since it is a mid-spec device, the battery capacity is a notch lower as well at 1,700mAh which is 600mAh less than the HTC One.

There’s no exact dates of availability but it is expected to be launched by middle of this year with LTE compatibility. It will be interesting to see how HTC would name this model since the flagship is simply “One” without any additional letters at the back.

Following our previous Camera Shootout for Videos, we have done some sample shots during the day. This time we tested the HTC One, BlackBerry Z10, Nokia Lumia 920, iPhone 5 & Sony Xperia Z. The Sony Xperia ZL was dropped this time as it produces the same result as its water resistant sibling.

Among the smart phones we have tested, only HTC One and Sony Xperia Z offers native HDR Video recording. It is worth pointing out that the Nokia Lumia 920 is rather steady thanks to its optical image stabiliser.

Head after the break to view the samples. Don’t forget to change the resolution to HD to watch it in higher quality.

In terms of price, the HTC One with 32GB storage goes for RM2,299 while the 64GB model is going at RM2,499.
To recap on the specs, the HTC One runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 1.7GHz Quad-Core processor with 2GB of RAM. In terms of design, the HTC One stands out with an elegant aluminium body and its outstanding feature has to be its front facing stereo speakers that knocks the competition away when it comes to audio/video playback.
