The latest member of the Gorilla Glass family has just been demoed at CES 2013. Corning Inc. boasts that Gorilla Glass 3 is 40% more scratch resistant than the previous version of its glass product, and that now, even fewer scratches that do occur will be visible to the naked eye.

Corning began its research into chemically strengthened glass in the 1960s, and the world first saw its Gorilla Glass product line used on the iPhone in 2007. Last year, Gorilla Glass 2 was launched, being 20% thinner than the original Gorilla Glass, but with the same strength and scratch resistance. It’s amazing to see how far the technology has progressed from its humble beginnings.

Check out this video demonstrating just how strong the the new version of Gorilla Glass is. The video shows a promoter using a 130 gram steel ball to dent aluminium, and break a competitor’s glass product but the Gorilla Glass 3 remained intact withstanding a direct load of 100lbs with ease.

See for yourself after the jump.

Update: For some reason, the video has been removed by the uploader. We’ve found another video that tests the Gorilla Glass screen on the HTC One X but this time it looks for believable. Check out the video right after the jump.

The HTC One X is made out of very tough one-piece polycarbonate and the display uses the latest version of Corning’s ultra-strong curved Gorilla Glass. That is not to say the device is bulletproof but in this video, the strengthened glass appeared to be impenetrable.

We’re a bit skeptic about this because we’ve seen Gorilla Glass fracture to pieces as a result of stress that’s much less abusive that multiple direct hits from a nail. If you’re a HTC One X owner, we don’t recommend you do this to your device to impress your friends.

Wonder if we can get a unit from HTC to test this for ourselves. You know how to get in touch with HTC.

It was earlier revealed that the Galaxy Nexus will not come with Corning’s Gorilla Glass protection. This was a shocker as most smart phones today will come with this strengthen glass which protects from daily abuses.

So what happens if a Galaxy Nexus meets with your bunch of keys in the pocket? Someone has put the Galaxy Nexus to the test, so watch the video above to see the results.

As mentioned before, it is unlikely for Samsung to omit strengthen glass and they might be using alternative glass like Dragontail. While it can’t be confirmed if it is indeed Dragontail, at least we now know there’s some form of toughen glass being used in the Galaxy Nexus.

If you’re wondering whether — or if you assumed that — the Galaxy Nexus comes standard with Corning’s Gorilla Glass then this should come as a shocker. The Galaxy Nexus — just like the Nexus S before it — does not come with Gorilla Glass.

Is this a big deal? Well to those who have the tendency to mix phone and keys in the same pocket, yes, this is a very big deal.

But this is not to say that Samsung omitted strengthened glass on the Galaxy Nexus altogether. There’s Dragontrail, which is an alternative to Gorilla Glass, so it is possible that Samsung just opted for a different supplier this time around.

Of course, this is pure speculation at the moment, but surely Samsung won’t just give consumer plain old unprotected glass in one of its high-end phone right?

For those of you that’s been been wondering if the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a Gorilla Glass strengthened display, here’s an official answer.

Corning has announced that their Gorilla Glass strengthened glass is featured on the Galaxy Tab 10.1

Here’s the official word:

GALAXY Tab 10.1 is recognized for its high-end technology and amazing design, even among industry experts. For the GALAXY Tab 10.1, Samsung Electronics searched for the most durable, scratch-resistant glass, and again found the perfect solution with Corning Gorilla Glass.

So now you know. But even so, don’t think everything with Gorilla Glass in unbreakable. Strengthened doesn’t mean invincible as this drop test reveals.

Still, its good to know that the soon to be launched in Malaysia Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is protected to some degree. But then again, can any tablet or smartphone afford not to have some sort of strengthened glass on its displays nowadays? We think not.

[via]

Saw this on HTC Malaysia’s Facebook page. It doesn’t reveal much but our guess is that it could be pointing to the possible launch of the HTC Watch service and along with it a big bang launch of the HTC Sensation with a telco.

HTC Watch is a movie on demand service that lets you watch movies on your HTC device. The content is said to be streamed as progressive download which lets you watch it while the content is still downloading — watch your movie while it downloads.

Of course all this is not confirmed but at the HTC Flyer unveiling, HTC have indicated that the HTC Watch service is coming to Malaysia sometime around August.

If this is indeed true, HTC has a tremendously compelling value proposition on their hands with the HTC Watch. If the movie content is current and the price is right, many will see a strong appeal in HTC Watch.

While we have the HTC Incredible S and Desire S launched recently, the next device to look out for is the HTC Sensation. This will be the HTC’s flagship Android smartphone featuring a dual-core 1.2GHz processor and a high resolution qHD Super LCD display that supports 960×540 resolution.

Smart phone hardware is just half the story and HTC has released a video that showcases its HTC Sense 3.0 software in a 5 minute video clip. Among the exciting features to expect is an active lockscreen which gives you essential shortcuts without unlocking the device. This is somewhat similar to what’s being offered on Samsung Galaxy S‘s TouchWiz lock screen.

While most smart phone these days are boasting high MP count of 8MP and above, the HTC Sensation is stepping up the game with its instant capture camera. From the video, this lets you snap pictures instantly so that you’ll never miss a shot again. For taking pictures instantly, we’re wondering if it can match the Xperia arc’s camera performance.

Another new feature they have mentioned in the video is HTC Watch, a movie on demand service which lets you watch premium movie content while on the go. The content is said to be streamed as progressive download which lets you watch it instantly while loading. We don’t expect this to be available in Malaysia but who knows, they might secure a content licensing deal for us folks in South East Asia.

So when is this phone coming to Malaysia? The LG dual-core Optimus 2X is already here and the Samsung Galaxy S II is expecting to make an appearance either end of this month or June. Since the Sensation has just being recently announced, we have a feeling it might reach here sometime between July and September. We just can’t wait.

Check out the video after the break

While we wait for the launch of the Flyer and Desire S this Friday, HTC has just introduced its latest flagship Android smart phone, the HTC Sensation — the most powerful HTC smart phone ever.

The Sensation features a 4.3-inch qHD Super LCD screen with Gorilla Glass that displays a whopping 540×960 pixels. The display also features a contour design along the entire edge of the screen which HTC claims lend a premium feel to the device while at the same time protecting the screen from grit and sand when it’s placed screen-side faced down.

Processor-wise the Sensation is packing a 1.2Ghz dual-core Snapdragon with 768MB RAM and 1GB of internal storage. In the camera department, there’s an 8MP rear camera with dual LED flash and 1080p HD video capabilities. HTC says the camera offers instantaneous shutter response allowing you to capture images and videos faster. At the front you get a standard VGA resolution camera.

In addition the the plethora of wireless connectivity the Sensation supports both HDMI and DLNA output as well. Powering all this is a 1520mAh battery.

The HTC Sensation runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the latest HTC Sense UI skin on top. The new Sense UI features HTC’s active lockscreen which serves live information, like weather and stock prices right without the need to unlock the phone. In addition the active lockscreen allows you to unlock straight into an app by dragging its link into an unlocking circle.

The HTC Sensation also brings with it HTC Watch video store which allows users to download movies and television shows by renting or buying them directly from the device. We doubt that this feature will be of much use here in Malaysia.

Asia launch window for the HTC Sensation is sometime between June and September (yes, we’re looking at you Maxis). Head on over the jump for a some promo videos of the HTC Sensation.

When it comes to tough glass Corning’s Gorilla Glass has sort of become the household name. Everybody wants Gorilla Glass on their devices and for good reason too. It’s strong as nails, virtually resistant to scratches and it is as smooth as the smoothest thing you can think of.

That is up till now.

With Dragontrail — a rival toughened glass developed by Asahi Glass Co of Japan — Gorilla Glass will have a competitor. The Dragontrail glass’ claim to fame is much the same as that Gorilla Glass, almost unbreakable, scratch resistant and is as smooth as ever.

What’s the difference between the two? The new report doesn’t say but we bet there comparison videos pitting the dragon and the gorilla will pop up on the internet in due course. It’ll definitely be interesting to watch.

Head on over to after the jump for a news report on the launch of Dragontrail in Japan.

Like we’ve said before, we’re fans phones that can take a pounding and still comeback for more. There is something seriously cool about a rugged phone, some kind of magnetism that we can’t put out finger on. So naturally, when we found out that the Motorola Defy was going to be launched in Malaysia we were pretty stoked.

So we were at the launch today to get some some brief hands-on time with the Motorola Defy and here’s our first impression.

Overall design, feel and built-quality
What can we say about the Defy. For starters, it looks decidedly run-of-the-mill — candybar form factor with soft edges and a ruberised, soft-touch plastic casing — but that is not really an issue, it’s not ugly or odd looking, it’s just plain. You might not stand-out from the crowd with the staid all-black colour (US and EU Defys get a smart two tone white and black exterior which we think should be an option here) exterior but you can definitely rack up some major cool points when you calmly chuck the Defy into the pool at your next pool party only to fish it out and show your friends that the Defy is still able to make phone calls

The Motorola Defy is most probably the first rugged Android device in the market but unlike other dust- and water-proof phones before it, the Defy — erm — defies convention by not being bulky or heavy. Other than the bunch of Torx screws (seven on the outer casing, if you’re counting) littered all around the outer casing of the device and the rubber dust covers ensuring that the exposed microUSB and 3.5mm ports have a water-tight seal, the Defy feels and weighs just like any other smart phone out there. And that’s a good thing because you get a lot of protection without so much bulk added.

Comparing the Defy with some of the most svelte devices in the market in terms of thickness and weight — iPhone 4 9.3mm 137g, Samsung Galaxy S 9.9mm 118g, Nexus S 10.8mm 129g — the Defy at 13mm thick and 118g heavy, sits is comfortably average. For good measure, here’s the thickness and weight of the HTC Desire Z that features pop-out keyboard, 14mm 180g.

In terms of built quality, we can’t fault the Defy. The soft-touch rubber-like plastic feels good in the hand and looks like it can hold up to a lot of scuffs and drops for a long time to come.

Internals and user interface
The Defy runs Android 2.1 skinned with enhanced Motoblur which brings with it some useful improvements like a download manager that is smart enough to hold your large file uploads until it detects that you’re connected to a WiFi network. The option to turn the Defy into a 3G mobile router is also available as well as home screen widgets that you can resize to suit your needs.

Powering the Defy is an 800Mhz TI OMAP 361 processor with 512MB of RAM and 2GB of on board storage. Memory expansion comes in the form of microSD with the Defy capable of taking up to 32GB cards

Dominating the front of the Defy is a Gorilla Glass strengthened 3.7in capacitive touchscreen with a fairly high 854×480 pixel resolution. From what we’re gathered during our limited time with the Defy at the launch, the touchscreen accuracy and response of the is very good, the screen is also very and sharp despite not incorporating any fancy schmancy display technology like super AMOLED. Basically, no complaints here. It’s simple and it works and with Gorilla Glass protection you can bet that it’s pretty darn strong to boot.

The enhanced Motoblur skin looks to be one of the better integrated UIs to be installed on top of the Android OS to a point that it looks like a part of the OS rather than an add-on. Scrolling through the home screens and opening up websites reveals that it is also much optimised with the hardware and the Android 2.1 OS producing a snappy user interface.

This is not to say that we are fans of skinned Android devices but as far as those things go, the Defy with this enhanced Motoblur runs smooth and that’s a good thing. We can’t say we’d like it in the long run but from our hit-and-run test, it looks to be something we can get used to.

In terms of battery life, what can we say, we had a very short time to fiddle with the Defy but with a battery capacity of 1540mAh, we’re expected a pretty decent usage time between charges. A full-on test can help us verify this so here’s hoping we’ll get a review unit soon.

At the end of the day

We’ll reserve our final verdict until after we’ve thoroughly tested the Defy but from our first impressions there’s a lot to like about the Defy and if the success of Motorola Droid brand of Android phones are anything to go by then the Defy is looking to be like another sure fire hit for those who are looking for a tough phone that’s easy on the wallet.

Speaking of wallets, the Motorola Defy retails for RM1,599 outright — not too far off from our earlier estimate of between RRP1,300 to RM1,500. If you don’t mind contracts you get the Defy on contract with Maxis at the following prices: RM999 for 24 months, RM1,149 for 18 months and 1,299 for 12 months. As per all the other Maxis Android device plans all you need is Value Plus plan with a data plan added on, you can choose the denominations.

Brightstar — the distributor for Motorola devices in Malaysia — tells us that the Defy will hit stores before Christmas which, if our estimation is correct, realistically means it could be available for you to purchase as early as this Friday. In any case, we’ll keep you updated on the latest, just keep it locked on to SoyaCincau.com.

So that’s about it, our first impressions of the Motorola Defy, a device that is shaping up to be a pretty good buy for those who want their smart phones to handle much more that the clumsy drop.
