If you’re from Malaysia and you buy stuff online, you would probably know of sites like Lazada and 11street. They’re known for big deals and relatively low prices on a wide range of products including electronics and gadgets.
But if you’re really hunting for the best deals on gadgets and electronics, those in the know, know that there is one website that sells most of these items more affordably than anywhere else. It’s called GEMFIVE and today is a sad day because it looks like our favourite e-commerce site is dead.
The Goods and Service Tax (GST) is just around the corner as the month of March draws to a close, and it’s a given that a lot of the electronics we know and love are going to get a price hike come April 1st.
So far, there haven’t been any corporations that have confirmed anything about the price hike and most are keeping mum about the specifics involving the 6% GST tax, especially since the tax will be included in production costs as well.
Hit the break for a list of items taxable.
For the gadget junkie, 2011 has been a particularly eventful one. We’ve seen a lot of product launches this year, possibly more than last year and what’s even more interesting is that we’ve gotten our fair share of first dibs.
Many of the HTC devices arrived to Malaysia first before it hit other markets. Similarly, the Samsung Galaxy S II was launched in Malaysia first before it hit US shores, same goes with the Xperia arc and a few other devices. When it came to Apple devices, we saw the iPad 2 come to Malaysia much faster than the first iPad and we can expect the new iPhone to be launched here in the same pace, if not faster.
While most are counting down to the final three months of the year and looking forward to the holidays, don’t think for a moment that manufacturers are taking a breather. There are still a few devices that are coming to Malaysia before we call it a year and a lot is going to happen in the final quarter of 2011.
But what are these devices?
The Nokia N9 is a known quantity, so to is the next-gen iPhone. These devices are definitely coming in Q4 2011 but that’s not all. There are a few other devices from some of the more popular brands in Malaysia that will be making their debut in the same period. At this moment in time we’re not allowed to say anything but boy do we want to.
In any case, do take our word for it. The closing chapter of 2011 is going to be an exciting one for gadget fans just you wait and see. Meanwhile, we’ll keep a close eye on developments, when it is safe to let the cat out of the bag, you’d be sure to know we’ll probably be the first to do it.
