Check out this WiMAX Samsung Galaxy S II developed for use on Japan’s KDDI au network in Japan. Aside from the additional WiMAX radio, this variant of Samsung’s hottest selling device also gets a processor bump from the 1.2Ghz dual-core in the standard S II to a 1.4Ghz dual-core in the WiMAX version. The display has been uprated too, from the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED that we get here to a pretty awesome 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD pushing 1280×720 pixels display. Other specs include an 8MP and 2MP cameras, full 1080p HD video recording as well as NFC.

The WiMAX Galaxy S II has all the makings of a very desirable smartphone. If we’re not mistaken Japan’s WiMAX network run on the 2.5GHz frequency band while the ones in Malaysia run on 2.3Ghz. With a little tweak and testing, it’s very possible for Samsung to make a version of this WiMAX S II that can run on Malaysia’s WiMAX network.

There’s definitely a market for this WiMAX Galaxy S II in Malaysia. Of course we’re simplifying things here and there’s a lot of things that a local WiMAX operator needs to do to make this device work in Malaysia but the point of the matter is that it can happen and we have a WiMAX operator that has proven itself to be able to make amazing things happen. The question is whether they want to or not. Let’s hope they say Yes.

Check out the WiMAX Galaxy S II product page here.

According to TheStar, YTL Communications is in the process of securing licenses to roll out its Yes 4G services in the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. Its CEO Wing K. Lee had mentioned that YTL has received acknowledgement from the Government and they are now requested to submit their business plan.

Currently REDtone is the only WiMAX operator in East Malaysia and they haven’t been expanding much since its launch 3 years ago. About 2 years back, P1 too had showed intention of expanding to East Malaysia but this hasn’t materialise until today. We’re not sure what was holding them up but we believe expanding to Sabah/Sarawak is much more complicated compared to other states in Peninsular Malaysia due to different local/state regulations.

If Yes is able to roll out, this will give Sabah/Sarawak consumers more broadband choice as 3G providers are still struggling to cover all major towns. It would be impressive if Yes can cover the trunk road from Kuching to Miri and from Lawas to Kudat – the tip of Borneo.

For YTL, moving into Sabah/Sarawak is crucial for them to claim nationwide 4G coverage as no WiMAX operator has coverage on both sides of the South China Sea. REDtone too has tried to enter Peninsular Malaysia but so far we haven’t heard anything from them.

In terms of coverage, it was also reported that YTL aims to double up its network sites from 1,200 base stations during launch, to 2,500 by year end. This includes expansion of sites at Johor, Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu.

Recently you probably have seen P1 4G doing tie in ads with the latest installment of Fast and Furious movie. The movie sponsorship, if it considered as one seems to portray P1 as a speed demon broadband in conjunction with its Stronger, Wider and Faster motto. From the surface, it looks as if P1 is hard selling the movie more than its own broadband service which is actually having some noteworthy offers.

For the past several months, P1 has been doing its 50% off promo on its broadband service for 2 months on both fixed home broadband and portable USB broadband plans. Now they have thrown in more discounts for new subscriptions.

Home Broadband

For fixed home usage, they are offering subscription of only RM49 for 3 months on both Pro (4.8Mbps) and Plus (1.2Mbps) broadband plans. This gives substantial savings for Pro users of RM270 from monthly subscription fees alone. The promo 3 months subscription fee does not apply on its lowest Lite (400kbps) plan.

Portable Broadband

For portable plans, they offer promo rates with RM10-30 reduction depending on plans for 6 months. Casual W1GGY (600kbps) is offered at RM49 (RM10 savings), W1GGY (1.5Mbps) at RM69 (RM20 savings) while Super W1GGY (No limit) at RM99 (RM30 savings) which gives a total savings of RM60, RM120 and RM180 off the total monthly subscription respectively.

If you’re interested, you can head to their home broadband page here or W1GGY page here. New subscribers can stand a chance to win some holiday trips too.

It baffles us to why P1 would overshadow its plans and services for a movie, considering they have a pretty good offer with substantial savings at the moment. Even from the ads and banners, we felt that P1 is underselling its services which should be a main focus instead. Other telcos do have tie ups with artists and movies but they were done without overshadowing its core services. Anyway, perhaps P1 has its own reasons and they should know better.

Google has announced another new official Android device, the Nexus S 4G. This comes after the original Nexus S device and it also runs on the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. Just like the Nexus S, the Nexus S 4G is co-developed with Samsung and it also features the same 4″ Contour Display with Super AMOLED. The device currently is available via Sprint which allows it to take full advantage of its 4G WiMAX network. Before you get someone in the US to buy one for you, do realise that this Nexus S 4G runs on CDMA/EV-DO network instead of GSM network.

At the same time, Google has also announced that existing Sprint customers will be able to utilise Google Voice while keeping their same number. For those who didn’t know, Google Voice lets you stay connected on multiple platforms with just 1 number. You can read up more about this in our previous post here. This sounds similar to Yes‘s voice service where all your devices can share the same ID. Watch the demo video after the break to get a clearer picture.

Nexus S 4G will be made available for online order this coming spring and shall make their way to Sprint retailers and Best Buy stores in the US.

REDtone, the other WiMAX operator which operates in East Malaysia is also doing a Chinese New Year Promotion for its Home Broadband packages. From now until 28th February 2011, they are giving 1 month free subscription, free 12 months modem rental, free activation waiver (worth RM100) and a 7 days money back guarantee.

Plans and packages wise, they are pretty much the same as before with their entry Home-Lite going at RM98/month with 1Mbps download speeds and 384kbps upload. The monthly quota for their Home-Lite is 25GB/month. More details on the promotion at their website.

REDtone has been pretty quiet lately and according to their coverage map, their WiMAX service is limited to Kuching, Miri and Kota Kinabalu. Several months ago, REDtone was pretty ambitious and wanted to be given the right to roll out in Peninsular Malaysia as well.

Sabah and Sarawak residents are quite deprived when it comes to internet connectivity and even 3G coverage is not covered in all major towns and cities. With the lack of choice, this is quite a gold mine for other telcos to jump in before the rest catch up in this region. In 2009, P1 had announced that they will be coming to Sabah and Sarawak in 2010 but until now they have yet to make any presence at all on that side of the country. If P1 makes an entry, that would shake up the competition in the wireless space in Sabah and Sarawak.

In the meme world, when Hitler gets word of the latest happenings, hilarity often ensues. One of the latest subjects of Hitler’s wrath is local WiMAX operator P1 4G and it got us laughing.

For the uninitiated “The Hitler Meme” or “Hitler finds out” is a video meme involving the addition of new subititles to the dramatic scene of Hitler’s final meltdown from the German movie Downfall directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. The subtitles are often anachronistically altered with humerous English subtitles surrounding current events.

It appears that the source of this viral video could very well be from P1 themselves and while some might not agree with the message in the video, we think many will agree that it is rather funny.

Head on over to after the jump for the funny vid. Also included, bonus video on the origin of the Hitler meme. Enjoy!

Update (1800hrs 23122010): P1 has updated the information on their website to include the newly launched MF230 MiFi device. Find out more after the jump.

A while ago, P1′s CEO, Micheal Lai teased everyone with the prospect of P1 coming out with a 4G MiFi. This was two months ago and he claims that the P1 MiFi “works wonderfully well while others fail“.

We like MiFis and it’s nice to know that there will soon be another type to choose from. Though it’s rather ironic that P1 was amongst one of the first (if not the first) operator to have hinted that they were going to market a MiFi device but are now the last of come into the market with one but as the saying goes, better late than never.

So here it is, the MF230 MiFi device from P1 and currently you can only get it from Harvey Norman.

Reliable sources reveal that in terms of pricing, the device itself cost RM250 but you’ll have to purchase it with a plan. The plan that comes with the 10GB data usage a month with download speeds up to 1.5Mbps at RM89/month. As an introductory offer, P1 is giving first month subscription free and you only pay RM44/month for the 2nd and 3rd month. Essentially the plan is the same as the one offered with the P1 W1GGY.

In terms of device performance, you can connect five devices simultaneously to the the MF230 and Green Packet claims that the battery lasts up to four hours “active-usage“. In terms of range, the FAQ states that you get 20 meter connectivity range indoor and 35 meters outdoors.

The P1 MF230 is produced by its parent company Green Packet, you can check out the specifications here. Unlike P1 devices previously the MF230 is branded Green Packet rather than P1 which can confuse some customer we think.

<del datetime="2010-12-23T09:58:15+00:00">No details available on P1′s website yet but we’ll keep you posted if there’s any.</del> P1′s website is updated with info on the MF230 and we’ve poured through the FAQ to understand the plan, head on over to after the jump to see what we’ve discovered.

First up, not only is the MF230 only available at Harvey Norman, only six outlets available throughout Malaysia, you can only purchase the device if you purchase an iPad at Harvey Norman. The FAQ didn’t say if the iPad and the MF230 must be purchased at the same time or if you are still eligible to purchase the MF230 even when you’ve purchased the iPad on a separate date.

5. I am an existing US-230/UM-230/UH-235 customer. I like the MF-230. Can I change my US-230/UM-230/UH-235 Portable Modem to the MF-230 Portable Modem?
The MF-230 is exclusively for customers who purchased an iPad at one of the 6 Harvey Norman stores throughout Malaysia.

We don’t understand why the sales channel is limited to only six outlets across Malaysia. It’s even more perplexing to find out that a customer will have to purchase an iPad first before they can purchase the MF230. This means the entry cost for the MF230 is the highest in the market — you have to buy and iPad to be able to buy the MF230.

We’re not sure what is the logic behind this. It seems that the product team at P1 is with the understanding that only iPad users need MiFi. Obviously this is not the case. The appeal of a MiFi is in its flexibility and as consumers it is up to us to what devices we want to connect our MiFI to, we don’t like that P1 is forcing users to purchase an iPad to be able to purchase the MF230. In that case, we might as well just get a multitude of other MiFi devices that available for outright purchase without the need to purchase an additional and not to mention expensive device.

For security purposes, the first thing you’d want to do with wireless routers is to change the SSID or the network name and the password required to log on to the wireless network. You do this so that only you know the password and you reduce the chances of people riding on your network without you knowing. Usually you can do this fairly easily by accessing the device configuration page using a web browser.

With the MF230, this is not the case. If you want to change the SSID and the security password on the MF230 you have to take it to an authorised P1 centre to have it changed. This is too much of a hassle in our opinion.

13. Q: How can I change my SSID and WEP Key?
A: You will need to walk in to our P1 P@ddock or PitStop (JB & Penang) with your MF230 device. Our friendly customer consultant will change the SSID and WEP Key for you.

This means you’re stuck with the default SSID and password right out of the box and if this password is compromised you won’t know how many people might be riding on your network. More importantly, there is nothing you can do to stop it, unless of course if you’re willing to take the time to go to an authorised P1 centre to get it changed and depending on where you are, that could mean taking an hour off work or a day. Either way, not good.

Yes says they deliver a mobile 4G experience. With this notion in mind, took our Yes Go on a road test in KL and we’ve taken it on a road test in PJ.

From our findings, both tests produced consistent results. The Yes network is indeed capable of delivering mobile data services but there are several gaps in its coverage that we hope Yes can cover quickly to deliver true seamless mobility broadband. Having said that and considering the fact that Yes is a new network, we were mightily impressed by the extent of the network coverage so far as well as the speeds that we were able to achieve during the previous two road tests.

So things are looking peachy for this new network but we’ll have to keep reminding you this is still a new network with a relatively smaller load on it compared to the more established players. We’ve heard so many times before that Malaysians don’t mind paying for their Internet so long as it is consistent and reliable. This looks to be an opportunity in which YTL can capitalise on. There is no secret formula to being a successful Internet service provider, all they need to deliver is consistency.

As we’ve been enjoying very good speeds on the Yes network, we hope Yes is able to keep this speed consistent even as the network gets loaded up with subscribers. If they can, then there’s really nothing to hold Yes back in winning the hearts and wallets of Malaysians.

So back to our topic of discussion. We’ve shared with you our findings on the performance — both in terms of mobility and speed — of the Yes network in certain areas in the Klang Valley, the question now is how does Yes perform outside Klang Valley?

It’s common sense for telcos to focus the bulk of their network resource towards market centres and high densitiy areas. This means more that often than not, outlying rural areas are not as well covered as it should be. At launch Yes boasts a population coverage of 65% deploying over 1,000 base stations throughout the country. This is more than its current 4G competitor P1 which currently claim around 40% population coverage with under 900 base stations currently being deployed.

All this is fine and dandy but right now what we want to know is where exactly in the populated areas is the 65% coverage focused on. Can Yes deliver consistent connectivity outside city centres? How is the network performance in areas outside of KL?

To find out, we took our trusty Yes Go along with USB modems and SIMs from DiGi, Maxis and U Mobile and hit the road up north to Penang for a mega road test shootout. On the way, we also wanted to find out if the Yes network has indeed got most of the North-South expressway covered.

Initially their map showed coverage blanketing most parts of the highway however a day before our trip, we found out that the map has been “updated” revealing a completely different coverage map with much less areas covered. This got us contemplating if we should carry on with the test as it looks like there is no coverage on our route, but with the understanding that sometimes coverage maps can be inaccurate, we continued with the test anyway.

How the test was done
We connected the three SIM cards (DiGi, Maxis, U Mobile) to separate laptops using USB dongles. For Yes, we used the Yes Go USB dongle that is connected to another laptop. So in total we have four laptops running all along our journey up to Penang.

All along the trip, we did speed tests for all the connections at regular intervals — between 3km to 5km or as close to it as possible. Where we can, we conducted some streaming tests by downloading test files and videos from YouTube to see if we can stay connected and complete a download.

In Penang, we added P1 into our test regime to see how it would compare with Yes on the island. For P1, we used the original W1GGY USB dongle at it is connected to another laptop.

Note: We left out Celcom because we don’t have enough equipment to test five operators simultaneously. In addition, we felt Celcom’s broadband network to be below par when compared against the rest in this test (sorry Celcom). Also, we didn’t include P1 on the drive up to Penang because its network is not capable of delivering mobility and hence we were not able to get connected while moving.

Now it’s on to the test.
We entered the North South highway from the Damansara Exit on the Sprint highway and started our speed tests (DiGi, Maxis, U Mobile and Yes simultaneously) right after the toll booth. At the toll plaza, we got speeds of 7.8Mbps download from Yes while the DiGi and Maxis are holding up decently above 1Mbps. U Mobile on the other hand, showed a rather poor 440Kbps download speed, which was not what we expected as we usually get very good speeds on U Mobile.

Along the way our early concerns of not being able to stay connected to the Yes network proved to be an issue as we passed the Jejantas Sungai Buloh rest stop. As we passed Saujana Akasia, we got disconnected from the Yes network due to lack of coverage.

Despite this, we continued on with our speed tests traveling at an average speed of 110km/h occasionally peaking at 140km/h. Below are our results.

As you can see, along our test route we were getting patchy connectivity from all operators. At no point during this route were we able to stream any videos or download files from any of the networks that we tested. This goes to show that although you can get some form of data connectivity on the North-South Expressway, you can’t really do anything much with it.

But if we have to choose, from our experience during the test, Maxis delivered the most consistent speed and connectivity along the route. We were able to get connected on 3G and above at more places with Maxis than with any other operator.

Stop-over Ipoh

On the test we decided to stop-over in Ipoh to test the Yes coverage there as well. Approaching Ipoh we achieved the following results. As you can see coverage was patchy on the highway but right after we passed the Ipoh exit toll booth, we were able to get connectivity for all networks.

Within Ipoh town we see the Yes network displaying the same trait as the previous two road test we’ve done in the Klang Valley. In most cases coverage is good. In all the popular areas around Ipoh we were able to get connected to the Yes network and even while on the move, we got good speeds. As expected in terms of performance, Yes blows everything else out of the water. Some will be quick to point out that there are probably no subscribers in Ipoh and we will agree with you on that. So again we’re saying Yes needs to really make sure that they can maintain this level of performance because once people get used to this and it starts getting bad, then Yes will have a major problem on their hands.

But for now we’re calling it as we see it. At time of our tests, the Yes performance is really good. We’re literally seeing cable broadband performance on a wireless network, albeit with higher latency. We hope to be able to revisit this test maybe 6 months down the line to see if there is any difference in performance.

After Ipoh, it was non-stop to Penang. En route, connectivity was starting to get consistent and we were able to stay connected along longer stretches of the highway. This was where we conducted some streaming and download tests. Not surprisingly, Yes once again outshines all the other operators with fast download and smooth streaming even with 720p videos from YouTube.

On the Penang bridge right at the midpoint, our Yes Go lost connection. At the same time, our other test dongles on DiGi and Maxis too had dropped drastically in performance with both reverting to GPRS connectivity. About a couple of kilometres after the mid point, our Yes Go dongle picked up its connection again and we were able to get seamless connectivity from then on all the way to the Jelutong Expressway which, if you’re keeping track, is now called Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway in honour of the previous Penang Chief Minister.

On the Jelutong Expressway however connection wasn’t consistent on the Yes network. We experience situations where the Yes Go connection manager will show that we’re able to pick up good signal (full bar) and we’re connected but we were not able to send or receive any data, we couldn’t open any web pages and we were not able to ping any IP addresses. This was very pronounced as we neared Tesco along the expressway but we wouldn’t be too concerned about this as it appears to be an an isolated problem as we were able to get good connectivity and performance throughout the island.

On Penang island: P1 vs Yes
As we were on the island we initiated the second part of our test — to compare head-to-head the performance of two 4G operators, P1 and Yes. For P1 we used the original W1GGY connected to a separate laptop to conduct our test. Before we even begin testing we note that Yes trumps P1 in terms coverage available on the island.

It is worth noting that P1 has a good 2 year lead over Yes to expand its coverage but in our tests, it appears that the Yes Go is the more usable modem. Anywhere that we went on the island, we were able to get connectivity even indoors. In one instance while in our hotel room we were not able to get data coverage with all our other broadband services except for Yes and it delivered really good speeds, we were streaming Internet radio all night without a hitch. This really impressed us.

During our various drive tests around Penang it was evident that P1′s coverage was spotty compared to Yes. In addition when we initiated mobility tests we noticed that the P1 W1GGY was not able to maintain connectivity while we were moving to the point where it got really frustrating. We compared the connectivity performance of both 4G dongles and in all instances we noted that the Yes Go was able to detect its network and get connected faster than the P1 W1GGY.

Despite this we still wanted to get some solid performance numbers for P1. So we limited our route within areas where we could get P1 connectivity. From our tests, P1 ‘s performance was rather erratic. In some places we managed to get 2Mbps but in most cases we got frustrated trying to open a web page. Ping test shows that we are connected to the P1 network but we were not able to get anything done. We were very disappointed with P1′s performance in this test, we just couldn’t get it to work. After a few failed attempts and poor performance in various locations, we decided to drop P1 from the test regime as we couldn’t get any form of results.

Despite our difficulty to get connected to the P1 network, we note that it offers the lowest ping of all. In all instances, we got less than 100ms for P1 while the rest hovers between 100-300ms range.

Overall we can say that the state of wireless connectivity in Penang is rather good. During our drive tests we got good speeds from DiGi and Maxis but as before, the speeds we got from the 3G operators is nothing compared the numbers we got from Yes.

To make the most of our time in Penang we made as many drive tests as possible around Penang town. In this instance we focused more on the streaming performance of the wireless connection. While in some areas we could get smooth YouTube streaming with Maxis, Yes managed to do one better with smooth 720p in all the areas that we’ve tested.

Below are the final set of results we got from our drive tests in Penang. We would like to point out that we even tested the 4G networks indoors to see if we could get connectivity. For those who’ve used 4G before will attest to the fact that indoor performance of WiMAX is rather poor. And so we didn’t expect much from Yes but it surprised us with good performance despite 2 to 3 bar connectivity indoors while the 3G operators delivered average performance and P1 simply faltered.

At the end of the day

So what conclusion can we derive from this test? In our opinion the drive test offered some revealing insights to the performance and coverage of wireless networks in the country. For one, we now know that be it the more established players like Maxis and DiGi or new players like Yes, no wireless network today offers seamless data connectivity on the North-South Expressway — the longest expressway in the country.

From the tests we also know that the most consistent performing wireless network on the expressway is Maxis. In our test, we could get usable data connectivity with Maxis in more places along the expressway than any other network but that is not saying a lot. In most instances, we were left with GPRS connectivity on both DiGi and Maxis, so although you can stay in touch with phone calls and SMS, you can really do anything much online.

And therein lies our biggest qualm with Yes. As a data network, Yes is amazing (for now at least), but as a mobile voice service, we have to say that the gaps in the Yes network is a deal breaker for us. Using Yes as a primary mobile voice line would mean that we will be unreachable often if we were to travel outstation regularly.

Mobile users use voice and data services differently and while we can forgive patchy data coverage, there is absolutely no excuse for a wireless operator to not be able to get a voice call or SMS across. Granted, people use voice less and less nowadays but it is an aspect that Yes needs to look into and address quickly for it to be able to properly complete with the 3G boys.

But here’s the thing, the Yes network is still new and for a new network the span of its coverage is nothing to sneeze at. Some may argue that Yes was late coming into the game so the additional coverage is a given but we don’t think that is a fair assumption. U Mobile, DiGi and P1 all launched their networks much earlier than Yes but all have smaller data coverage compared to Yes as our test reveals.

What about P1? From a respected name at the forefront of WiMAX and 4G, P1 now has a mountain to climb to win the hearts of Malaysians. We’ll be honest with you, we were once P1 subscribers but the service started to deteriorate so badly that we chose to take our money elsewhere. Michael Lai needs to get his head out of the gimmicky and downright silly marketing fluff and focus on bringing back the network from the brink. But that is just our opinion, maybe the smart people running the show at P1 know better. Even if they do, the results of our test and the consumers’ perception of the brand seems to say otherwise.

At the end of the day, despite the various issues that has been plaguing the newcomer from launch (some of which are still unresolved, like a very messy self-care portal), Yes has the most important thing done right and that is its network. As paying customers, we are now finding ourselves using Yes for data more often than we think we would. So much so that we’re contemplating of dropping our 3G data subscriptions for good. That is how much of an impact Yes has made on us.

But before we make the jump, we need to know that Yes will maintain the ferocious pace in which its network is growing and more importantly, we need the reassurance that Yes can consistently deliver this amazing performance that got us hooked in the first place. This reassurance is something only time can provide but it is up to the people at Yes to make the period in which the all important customer trust and confidence is build a very short period indeed.

Having tested the Yes Go’s mobility performance around Kuala Lumpur and discovering that the Yes network is indeed mobile delivering rather good performance, we decided to go a step further by taking the Yes Go to various parts of Petaling Jaya and Subang as well.

We wanted to find out if the Yes network can deliver consistent speeds and throughput performance outside of KL. We tested the Yes Go USB dongle on two routes, one along the New Pantai Expressway and the other along Federal Highway.

New Pantai Expressway
For the NPE route, we drove starting from Kuchai Lama exit on the Seremban Highway all the way until Sunway Pyramid. Throughout this journey, connectivity was maintained all the way. We were even able to surf the web seamlessly without any disconnection. The only gripe we had was data rates suddenly dropped to zero and regain back after a few seconds while switching base stations. This is a trait that we see a lot as we did the various road test on the Yes Go but it could be a minor hiccup considering that it was raining and we’re moving at about 100KM/H. We’ll need more test time to know for sure.

While on the route, we attempted to make a hotel booking transaction for our Penang roadtest. It is worth noting that by the time we reached Sunway, we’ve selected our rooms and made our booking, and we did it twice along the 11KM journey all without dropping a connection.

While passing by Sunway Pyramid, we did a download test and got 503KB/s, which is about 4Mbps. We continued driving until the junction of Subang Parade and the speed test returned below:

After turning into SS15 area, we got the following speed tests:

SS15 Station One

SS15 AsiaCafe

From the looks of it, Subang commercial areas are well covered with average speeds of 5-6Mbps. We didn’t go deeper into the residential areas or further down to USJ so we’re not sure how Yes fares over at those places.

Federal Highway

After that, we proceed to return back to KL via Federal Highway from NPE. On the NPE exit to Federal Highway near Glenmarie, we got the following SpeedTest result:

The 10.7KM journey from Subang to KL was pretty seamless except for some noticeable gaps that got us disconnected at Old Klang Road exit and at Kerinchi, other than that, it was smooth. Throughout this stretch, we’re getting pretty impressive speeds. While driving at about 110KM/H (where possible) we are getting average of 8-10Mbps after the Jalan 222 exit.

Passing Jalan 222 exit in front of P1 HQ

Passing AmCorp Mall

Passing Jalan Gasing exit in front of KWSP

Conclusion
We are pretty convinced that Yes is indeed a true mobile WiMAX player. Despite the network being just two weeks old, the coverage is good — to a certain extent much better than what we’re getting with P1. It is impressive to see that Yes have managed to cover major highways like NPE and Federal Highway.

As expected and experienced in our previous KL Road Test, there are still coverage gaps that needs to be addressed in order to deliver full seamless experience and we believe this isn’t something impossible for Yes to achieve in the near future.

We’ve been using the Yes Go on a day-to-day basis and we have nothing to fault the network in terms of performance but we will say this, it is still a new network and the onus is on Yes to make sure that this performance remains consistent as the network loads up with more subscribers.

Coming up next, our full report of our Penang road trip over the weekend and how it fares against other mobile internet players along the North-South Expressway all the way from KL up to the Pearl of the Orient, Penang.

We’ve a ton of news and findings to filter through but we can’t wait to share with you the story, so stay tuned for that!

We are heading up north to Penang to test the performance of the Yes 4G network outside of KL. We will be updating our twitter feed regularly along the way.

We’ve reached Ipoh and so far we found the coverage along the North-South highway from KL is patchy. We managed to get connectivity, albeit intermittent, up to the 404KM marker of the North-South highway. Where there’s coverage, the speed is generally better compared to 3G operators. Considering that Yes is a new network, we can see from our road test that Yes has better data coverage along the highway compared to the more established 3G networks like U Mobile and in some instances DiGi. Look out for our full report coming soon.

For regular updates on our trip to Penang, follow us on twitter at @Soya_Cincau to find out how Yes compares with other 3G operators on the road.
