Recently after the appearance of yes 4G rates, everybody gets cost conscious all of a sudden about Broadband pricing. Some had quickly mentioned that yes 9 sen/3MB ain’t cheap with some pointing out that it costs RM900 for their average 30GB of download usage.

Since cost per GB is a hot topic now, we figured why don’t we compare all broadband offerings in Malaysia and find out how much they cost per GB. Below is our findings ranking from the cheapest to the most expensive.

NOTE: So far we only considered plans either postpaid or prepaid that offer monthly access. Also added are the standard PAYU (Pay as you go) rates which includes yes and Tune Talk. There are different policies and terms for each plans with some only calculating download quota while others include uploads. There are also other factors to consider such as download speeds and excess charge if you exceed Fair Usage Policy. Streamyx ADSL was excluded due to the fact that they offer “unlimited access” with unspecified quota on a best effort basis.

We do admit that it is unfair to compare cost per GB across the board as there’s an obvious differentiator when it comes to application. In general, obviously fixed broadband is cheaper per GB but it compromises on mobility which often comes at a higher cost. To make it clearer, we have segregate the broadband offerings into 3 categories: Fixed Broadband, Mobile Broadband (Pure Data) and Mobile Internet (Add-on for Phone). Tune Talk has announced via twitter that twitter SMS is now available on their network. This is similar to the twitter SMS service offered by DiGi and Maxis.

The only detail we got is to SMS “START” to 28933 and that’s about it. There’s no info on how much it cost but we are guessing it is RM1/week like DiGi/Maxis and probably 5 sen for each SMS request. Tune Talk is probably too excited about the announcement and they forgot to tell its subscribers how to use it.

We we’re told from a subscriber that tried and all he got was “Facebook texts are now turned on” after SMSing START to the provided number. Strangely they didn’t provide any instructions on logging into your twitter account and other various commands. Tune Talk, this is not good at all. Please test your product and provide clear guide for your subscribers before announcing a half baked feature to the world.

Tune Talk has finally revealed its Tune Talk points which can be used to redeem free flights on AirAsia. Its chief talker Jason Lo had given a heads up yesterday via twitter.

So how do you earn these Tune Talk points? This is done simply by topping up and you’ll earn points based on the amount you use. The higher amount you top up, the more points you get per RM spent as per table below.

As you can see, the topping up RM50 and above gives you more points for the buck at 2.4x. So to speed up your points collection, RM50 is a good sweet spot for topping up. You can check your balance by dialling *133# on your tune talk line.

As far as redemption is concerned, it is not too hard and it is not too easy either. However it is easier to achieved compared to other forms of free flight redemption programs that we know of. The cheapest redemption starts at 2000 points for flights from KL to anywhere in Peninsular Malaysia or from Penang to Kuching Sarawak. Assuming if you top up RM50 consistently on a monthly basis, 2000 points is yours within 17 months which is equivalent to RM850 top ups made. We’re pretty sure that Tune Talk will come out with time limited promotion that turbo boost your points collection in the near future. So keep an eye on TuneTalk for upcoming promotions. The points collection starts today on 5th October onwards and once you get enough points, you can redeem your flights by calling 13100. The beauty of this is that the points won’t expire. Another thing to note is that all flight redemption must be done 30 days ahead of your desired departure date and no change is allowed after that. The points are non-transferable between Tune Talk numbers and credit transfers do not count as well.

We’ve gotta say this, Tune Talk’s website looks kinda childish and the design is out of place for a telco. Perhaps a revamp to standardise your pages?

Tune Talk, arguably Malaysia’s most value driven prepaid telco will be introducing a points collection system tomorrow.

Announced by chief talker (aka CEO), Jason Lo, the system will offer points for every top up made with Tune Talk and are then redeemable for flight tickets on Air Asia. Jason says the points don’t expire.

It’s an interesting concept but details have not been revealed yet, we’ll keep an eye on Tune Talk’s website to give you the latest as and when it is available.

UPDATE: Looks like TuneTalk has bumped their data speed from GPRS to EDGE. This makes it slightly faster with theoritical speeds up to 384kbps. At 5 sen per MB per session, this is the cheapest mobile data right now.

Has Tune Talk gone mad? Now they’ve announced that they are offering the lowest data charge ever at 5 sen per MB.

Don’t expect fast speeds as TuneTalk offers only GPRS which is very much like dial up. But at 5 sen per MB, this is a bargain for your casual facebook and twitting needs. We strongly recommend using Opera browser with their web compression technology for best experience with slow connection.

Formerly Tune Talk charges 10 sen per 10KB. The revised rates now is 5 sen per 1MB which looks like per MB blocks. This means whether you use a mere 10KB or 900KB, you will be charged a minimum of 5 sen per connection you make.

Tune Talk Prepaid is doing some good deeds during Ramadhan. A portion of all top ups will be contributed to possibly a charity of your choice. You’ll still be getting your full top up value while Tune Talk pledge extra for every top up made.

The charity organisation that they will be contributed is nominated by Tune Talk customers. Just SMS the name of your charity of choice to 7292 which is chargable at 10 sen each. This drive will run from 24th August until 5th September 2010. The top 5 nominated charities by 11th September will get the funds.

There’s no exact percentage that Tune Talk is going to give to charity as its written at their sole discretion on the T&Cs.

Some good news for all you TuneTalkers out there but unfortunately folks the prepaid validity extension is only for RM50 top up denomination.

Previously topping up RM50 on TuneTalk gives you 55 days of validity now the same top up amount gives you 75 days.

The new validity period does give extra value for big money toppers but TuneTalk’s grace period (this is how long you have after your validity expires to top up before your account is terminated) is amongst the shortest in the market today.
