UPDATE: Samsung Galaxy Camera launch promo includes additional battery worth RM89 and a Hotlink Broadband pack worth RM388. The broadband pack comes with 2GB of data (30 days validity) and 25GB Maxis Loker cloud storage (12 months). More details of the Hotlink Broadband package here.

The Samsung Galaxy Camera is now officially launched in Malaysia with the price tag of RM1,899. The Android camera will hit the stores starting tomorrow, 29th November. No telco bundlings are mentioned but for a limited time promo, the first 5,000 buyers will get a free Hotlink Prepaid Broadband SIM Pack with the Galaxy Camera.

To recap on the specs, the Galaxy Camera is running a recent Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS on a 1.4GHz Quad-Core Exynos processor that’s also found on the Galaxy S III. In terms of imaging, the Galaxy Camera has a 1/2.3″ BSI sensor that does 16.3MP. You’ll also get 21X Optical zoom which also comes with optical image stabilisation. Over at the back, it has a large 4.8″ Super Clear LCD screen that does a respectable 1280×720 pixels resolution. In burst mode, the Galaxy Camera lets you snap photos at 4 fps and videos up to 120fps. Just like the latest Galaxy smart phones, you’ll get similar features such as Best Face and Voice control.

Since Samsung is positioning this as an always connected device, one can share photos instantly with WiFi and 3G connectivity built in. Despite having a 3G micro-SIM slot, it doesn’t let you make phone calls however it is still possible to make Skype calls using its built in microphone and speakerphone. On-board, there’s 8GB of storage which is expandable up to 64GB using microSD. Overall, it is 19.1mm thick and weighs 300g with its 1,650mAh removable battery.

Being an Android device, the Galaxy Camera can run most apps which is normally accessible on Android smart phone. Since it is easily connected online, you can now take and upload photos in real time or even set it to auto upload to the cloud as soon as you take them. At home, the Galaxy Camera also lets you share photos and videos via wireless DLNA and HDMI cable as well. So far, the only competitor in terms of Android powered camera is the Nikon CoolPix s800c which runs on a lower Android 2.3 OS.

Stay tuned for our Galaxy Camera first impressions coming soon.

Maxis prepaid brand Hotlink has just introduced its new Prepaid Broadband service that offers download speeds up to 42Mbps. This replaces Maxis Prepaid Broadband that offer speeds up to 7.2Mbps.

The new plan comes in a SIM pack at RM5 and a complete Hotlink Broadband Starter kit that comes with a HSPA modem for only RM88. Both packages come preloaded with 50MB of free data. Existing Maxis Prepaid Broadband users are automatically converted to this new Hotlink Broadband plan effective 8th August and shall also get to have uncapped speeds up to 42Mbps.

In terms of data quota, there’s a wide range of Broadband passes to choose from as low as RM3/day:

In terms of speed, it varies on coverage and device. The bundled modem in the Starter Kit isn’t a HSPA+ variant and supports up to 7.2Mbps. It comes covered with a 12 months warranty. To get the most out of Maxis HSPA+ network, you would need a HSPA+ modem which is sold at RM280 at selected Maxis centres. If you plan to make calls and SMS, it does allow you to do so at 36 sen/min and 10 sen per SMS.

Hotlink Broadband is an affordable broadband option especially for travellers or those looking for an alternative wireless broadband for short term use. The wide range of broadband passes offers is certainly welcome to suit various usage.

Hotlink, Maxis’s prepaid brand today has revealed its new Bagus Plan that offers competitive rates. To get started, they are offering the starter pack at RM5 which doesn’t come with pre-loaded talk time and credit.

What’s new is its Bagus 5 Pass which offers lowered rates upon activation. For just RM5, you get to enjoy as low as 12 sen/min for Maxis to Maxis calls and 18 sen/min to call other networks. For SMS, Bagus 5 Pass charges 1 sen/SMS to Maxis and 10 sen/SMS to other networks. As limited time promo, the Bagus 5 Pass comes with free 10MB of data.

Upon activation of this Bagus 5 Pass, the RM5 is not burnt but instead transferred to a “Bagus 5 account” which is utilised for actual talk time at reduced rates. After finishing this credit, you will be charged the normal rate. You can only activate one Bagus 5 Pass per day and it is valid for up to a maximum of 3 days. To activate, just dial *100#, select Hotlink specials and select Bagus Pass.

For Hotlink users from other plans, you can change over to Bagus Plan by dialling *108*21#. RM1 fee will be charged for upgrading.

So what if you depleted or decide not to use a Bagus 5 Pass? Bagus offers discounted rates depending on your remaining credit balance. If you maintain a minimum of RM10, you get to enjoy 20% savings with calls to Maxis number at 20 sen/min and 30 sen/min if you’re calling other networks.

If you have less than RM10, you’ll be charged 24 sen/min to Maxis and 36sen/min to others. They still maintain Active 5 numbers with calls charged at 12sen/min.

In terms of IDD calls, Bagus Plan charges as low as 4 sen/ 30 seconds to China fixed line and 6 sen/30 seconds to India with its 13200 prefix. This makes it affordable for migrants and tourist to make calls back home. For International SMS, they are offering a lower 15 sen/SMS to selected 16 countries.

UPDATE: Maxis official iPhone 4S plans are out. Read more.

For those planning to buy an iPhone 4S in Malaysia without contract, the Apple Store was the only option. However here’s an alternative which you can consider which offers you extra free monthly data. Maxis apparently is offering a prepaid option for the iPhone 4S and this was spotted on their T&C in the RSVP microsite.

On Hotlink, Maxis’s prepaid brand, they would usually offer free 500MB data for 12 months if you purchase an iPhone from them outright. If you don’t find the need for a prepaid line, you can use this as a spare data SIM or sell it off for someone who’s looking for 500MB/month data SIM. As usual, the data is only valid provided that Hotlink account is active with regular top up. That’s not a bad value considering it would be priced the same as a standalone iPhone 4S from the online store.

Thanks to sharp-eyed @ihelpboard for the alert!

While Maxis will reveal its iPad data plans and device pricing tomorrow, Lowyat.net user stringfellow has released the data plans earlier than expected.

Looking at the photo taken off the brochure above, Maxis offers both postpaid and prepaid plans for the iPad. For postpaid, they offer 3.5GB, 6.0GB and 15.0GB monthly data plans at RM70, RM90 and RM200 respectively. It looks like there’s also an additional RM10 rebate if you’re an existing iValue or iData subscriber.

If the data quota of your subscribed plan is not enough, you can top up additional 500MB at RM8 which last for a day or RM18 for 500MB that’s valid for 30 days. Topping up additional 1GB will cost RM28 a month.

For prepaid users, they offer a range from as low as RM8/day for 500MB, all the way to the more expensive RM200 for 15GB a month.

Looking at the standalone postpaid plans, the cost per GB will be calculated as follows:
RM70 for 3.5GB=RM20/GB
RM90 for 6.0GB=RM15/GB
RM200 for 15GB=RM13.33/GB

When calculated cost per GB, the iPad data plans are cheaper than the normal Maxis plans but it is still costlier than U Mobile & DiGi’s offering.

Special thanks to Matt for the heads up!

During the event it was mentioned that the iPhone is available on prepaid and it comes with free 12 months of 500MB data. However we haven’t seen the price for prepaid yet. Even hotlink’s website is inaccessible at time of posting. The other postpaid price remains unchanged.

Hotlink has revised their prepaid data plans again. Last month they introduced 2 bi-weekly internet plans of 100MB and 250MB at RM18 and RM38 respectively.

Today we noticed the 250MB bi-weekly plan has been dropped and they have introduced a new lightweight 5MB weekly plan at RM3/week.

While 5MB is nothing much, it is pretty affordable for users that facebook or tweet lightly over Opera Mini. Normally 5MB would cost RM50 on pay per use basis (RM0.10 per 10KB), so RM3 for 5MB is a bargain.

Other packages are unchanged and Hotlink seems to cover users with different data appetites.

For those on a monthly package, take note! Hotlink provided a useful tip if you have a sudden need for data. Instead of busting your monthly quota when you require intensive data for a short period, you are able to purchase a RM2 hourly (100MB) or RM8 daily (500MB) pass on top of your subscription. This is a pretty neat flexibility given to manage your data cost and consumption better. Postpaid users get to enjoy this flexibility too as mentioned under Maxis postpaid internet section.

For more information, visit Hotlink’s page.

For comparison, we got the last month’s package table below.

UPDATE: Hotlink revises plans again. Drops 250MB option and introduces 5MB weekly package. Read about it here.

Hotlink has introduced a bi weekly rates for its mobile internet package in addition to its hourly, daily and monthly mobile internet packages.

The new bi weekly packages offer a 100MB data usage plan for RM18 and a 250MB data usage for RM38. It offers good options for the prepaid user but managing your data use the MB is a bit of a hassle in our opinion. If we had to choose, we’d take a monthly option any day. But having said that, if you’re using your mobile exclusively for IM and tweeting then, the bi weekly plans are worth a look.

NEW: Hotlink bi weekly mobile internet plans

OLD: Previous Hotlink mobile internet plans

Also, Hotlink will be revising their pay-per-use data rates to reflect industry standard rates of 10KB per block (RM0.10/10KB from 7am – 2am & RM0.05/10KB from 2am – 7am). The average price per KB remains the same. The new pay-per-use rates will take affect from 16 August onwards.
