Here’s something interesting.

Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a new interface technology that makes it possible for users to have a touchscreen experience on real world objects like paper. The system uses existing technology and equipment like off-the-shelf webcam and standard projector.

The technology allows users to easily and quickly convert information from a printed document into digital data. In also allows content providers to augment printed materials with interactive information like video and audio to prive additional information. The system is also smart enough to compensate for things like a curvature of a page in a book allowing it to adapt to content in various formats. In addition, the system can also detect the differences between normal hand movements to specific gestures to control the interface eliminating unwanted inputs.

The potential uses for this technology is tremendous, we can see it being useful in libraries, restaurants and in offices. Imagine instead of asking the waiter for more details about a particular dish, the system can project an interactive menu with video and sound to give you the information that you want. Cool stuff.

Epic right? That’s until you realise that the “10,000 iPhones” in this domino rally inspired video are not actually iPhones, they are not even real. The iPhones you see in the video are computer generated, created by the people at Aatma Studio, an animation and digital content studio based in San Francisco. It’s a pretty cool way to promote the studio and the animation work is top-notch that if we didn’t know that the phones were CG, we’d easily think that it was all real.

Our Pebble watch has finally arrived and we’ve given it a quick unboxing. To recap, the Pebble is a kickstarter smart watch and it connects to iOS and Android smart phones via Bluetooth. The front comes with a low power E-Paper display that shows text and graphics in monochrome dot matrix manner.

The box is rather no frills and inside you’ll have the pebble complete with a rubber strap and a USB charging cable. The cable is rather interesting as it comes with magnetic contact points like the MagSafe power adapters for Macbooks. The pebble itself feels pretty light and it also comes with back-light illumination, vibrator and a gyroscope.

Pairing the device is pretty easy via bluetooth and you can download additional watch faces and apps from your mobile phone. There’s even a snake game which you can install on the Pebble. In terms of apps, we are surprised that the Bike Computer, Golf and Running apps that was listed on their site are not available. Hopefully they would be releasing them for download soon.

First impression wise, the main watch body build feels quite cheap and it is glossy all over especially on our Black colour unit. It pales in comparison with the previous gen iPod Nano which was popularly converted as a wrist watch. However we like the fact that it is able to display your phone notifications, text messages and even emails on the watch. Under bright sunlight, visibility of the Pebble display is pretty good as seen in the photo above.

Another complaint which we have is the buttons which could have a more solid feel to it. The pebble also comes with a built-in alarm however it merely vibrates without any beeping sounds. For a person that relies on their mobile phone for time, this really is an interesting wearable gadget to have.

In case you’re wondering, we ordered ours from GeekZen.com at RM530. At the moment, it is out of stock but you can request to be notified of its next batch arrivals.

We will share more details in another review post. In the mean time, head after the break for the unboxing video.

Google has released the technical specifications for its much anticipated Glass — a mobile internet device that looks like a pair of really techy reading spectacles — and things are certainly shaping up to be interesting.

Glass will feature a 640×360 display that Google say will provide a viewing experience similar to a “25-inch high definition screen viewed from eight feet away”. It’s actually not that great if you think about it considering that 32-inch or 42-inch panels are a staple in most Malaysian living rooms.

Beyond the display, the Glass will also come with a 5-megapixel camera capable of 720p video. Audio if provided via a bone conduction transducer, which is cool. There will be 16GB of onboard storage, which is plenty when you consider that many entry level smartphones pack only 4GB.

Glass will also be comfortable to wear thanks to adjustable nosepads and a durable frame that Google say will “fit any face”. Battery life is described as good for “one full day of typical use,” but Google say that certain applications such as video recording and the use of Hangouts will affect battery performance.

In a related news, Google has also started shipping the Glass Explorer Edition — a US$1,500/pair early prototype — to developers earlier than expected but if you want to get your hands on one, you’ll have to wait till 2015.

Fingers crossed that Google will make it available for mere mortals much earlier. In the meantime, find out more about Google Glass here.

SwiftKey has unveiled what they are calling the future of typing on your mobile phones with its latest SwiftKey Tilt. Combining the ease of keyboard swiping and the popularity of pinball balancing, the new SwiftKey Tilt brings up a whole new typing experiencing which involves your entire body. This is probably the best mobile innovation that can help reduce overweight and obesity problems in Malaysia.

While this is an obvious April Fool’s Day idea, the SwiftKey Tilt is said to be a working feature. It can be activated by typing “tilt” followed by long pressing the “tilt” word in the suggestion bar to enable it.

UPDATE: After revealing that this is an April Fool’s Day prank, DiGi is giving out free 150MB of mobile internet pass for the first 1,000 prepaid subscribers. Activate it over here.

Having a mobile phone is a status symbol and it is more apparent 10-15 years ago, a time when not many people could afford one. These days, a mobile phone is a necessity and no longer a flashy fashion accessory that it used to be.

Unless you have a tens of thousands of ringgit to spare, DiGi now lets you stand out from the crowd with its new Vintage Phone Collection from RM1,499. Own a piece of history with the indestructible Nokia 3310, the flip phone crazed Motorola StarTAC or the iconic Ericsson SH888. These rare mobile phones are bundled with RM148 DG SmartPlan Classic.

As an added bonus, they are giving a rather hefty 30GB of Free Internet each month although utilising the data might be a challenge. With the physical numeric keypads, blind texting is definitely a joy especially while <del>driving</del> walking.

To find out more details, head over to DiGi’s Vintage bundling page.

Thanks to all who have alerted in the comments and via twitter!
