Google boss says don’t hold your breath for a Nexus Two

Posted:  July 5, 2010   By: ccsoya   2 comments

In an interview with UK’s Telegraph, Google CEO Eric Schmidt was asked if there will be a Nexus Two for the Google device diehards out there.

His answer left no lingering doubt in anyone’s mind that there will not be one, despite the many rumours floating around about such a device is currently being a work in progress.

For those who are unaware, rumours of a second Nexus device surfaced sometime early May with Motorola being named as the manufacturer that will be working with Google to bring the now vapour ware device into the market.

If Google is not going to continue with the Nexus legacy why bother with the device in the first place?

Google felt that the Android mobile platform needed a boost to showcase, what the OS could do with the right hardware and the right people behind it. Hence the partnership with HTC was established and the Nexus One was born.

You have to give credit, prior to the Nexus One, there wasn’t really a desirable Android device and from that perspective, we’ll give it to Google, with the Nexus One, they have succeeded in putting Android on the map. But we disagree with Schmidt when he says there’s no need for a Nexus Two.

Milestone beats Nexus One for most popular Android device

Posted:  July 4, 2010   By: ccsoya   3 comments

A monthly metrics report from mobile ad network, AdMob reveals the most popular Android phones currently on the market. Surprisingly Google’s flagship Nexus One is the least popular whilst Motorola Droid/Milestone tops the chart.

The findings was gathered from close to 13 million Android phones that are currently on the AdMob network in the month of May. This explains why some of the more recently released phones like the Samsung Galaxy S and the Droid X are not on the list while devices like the HTC Legend and HTC Desire are still trying to find traction against the other devices that have been in the market for a longer period like the HTC Hero which is currently sitting at the #2 on the popular Android phone list.

Currently, about 21% of Android phones being used are Motorola Droids/Miletones, while 16% of Android users own the old school HTC Hero. Alarmingly, Google’s Nexus One consist of only 2% of phones running Android. Hardly a fitting performance considering Google manufactured the Nexus One as a showcase of the perfect Android integration between software and hardware.

Latest FRF85B pushed to Nexus One the real Froyo deal?

Posted:  June 29, 2010   By: soyacincau   2 comments

Google is pushing out the another Android 2.2 Froyo update to Nexus One owners as highlighted earlier. If you have a Nexus One, do keep a look out for an update notification that will appear on your screen. The new update carries the build number FRF85B.

So why another update? According to Android Central, the first Froyo update numbered FRF50 wasn’t the final version. It seems that Google has pushed it first on Nexus One as a trial run experiment. Now with this upgrade, users will be getting the real deal although we are unsure if there’s any significant new features or they are just mere bug fixes.

Maybe this could be the reason other handset manufacturers are holding up. Hopefully this latest build is improved especially the external app storage option which seems to be left hanging in our review.

Nexus One comes to Korea, gets Froyo 2.2

Posted:  June 18, 2010   By: ccsoya   4 comments

We’re on a roll with Froyo and Google updates at the moment. It took a while but the Koreans will be the latest lucky geeks to be getting the Google Nexus One. And the deal gets even sweeter as the Nexus Ones heading to Korea will be running the latest Android OS, the 2.2 aka (Froyo).

KT will be the telco of choice if you’re in Korea and is in the market for a Nexus One. Outright it’s going to set you back an equivalent of RM1,900 or a very attractive RM410 for a 24-month contract.

Sadly, we’re nowhere near Korea at the moment. What’s more important is, when will Google and the device manufacturers clear the confusion on which devices that will be getting the Froyo and which will not.

Posted:  May 23, 2010   By: soyacincau   No comments

Nexus One users will slowly be updated to the latest Android 2.2 OS codename Froyo via OTA. If this is a nerve wrecking process for those who can’t wait, here’s a solution for you!

The guys at XDA Developers Forum managed to grab the link for the Froyo OTA download link and have shared it on their forum. Some members even created a mirror link, in case you can’t download properly from Google’s server.

Head on there now if you own an Nexus One and you can’t wait.

Android 2.2 Froyo appears on Nexus One as OTA update

Posted:  May 22, 2010   By: soyacincau   1 comment

While most android users are waiting for Android 2.2 to be officially available on their decides, Google’s very own Nexus One is getting it in a special way. Obviously a product from Google, the Nexus One is reported to have received the new Android 2.2 update OTA (Over the Air).

Nexus One users will be prompted a system alert in the notification tray prompting to download the new update. If you’re a Nexus One user, this update could be on the way to your device right now.

Now that is pretty convenient to step up to the latest Froyo and enjoy the vast improvements reported earlier. Will Android 2.2 Froyo be updated with the same manner for other device? Since HTC is the manufacturer for Nexus One, it would be the smart thing if all HTC handsets will receive the same OTA update as well.

Android 2.2 aka Froyo Hands on Review

Posted:  May 21, 2010   By: soyacincau   1 comment

Engadget has gotten their hands on a Google Nexus One running on Android 2.2 codename Froyo (Frozen Yogurt). They have played with the device and have review the list of changes and enhancement which we can all look forward to in the next Android update.

Enhancements noted as follows:

  • Revised navigation bar with direct short cuts to phone and web.
  • Ability to create WiFi hotspot using your 3G connection.
  • Allow HQ version of Youtube streaming video.
  • Allow installation of Apps in external storage such as your micro SD card
  • Improved camera controls.
  • Enhanced gmail app for next/previous item buttons.
  • Fine tuned Calendar viewing.
  • Improved voice recognition with various dialects.
  • Ability to set numeric PIN instead of pattern lock
  • Flash 10.1
  • Improved benchmark performance

Speaking of Flash 10.1, it is now released as Beta but unfortunately it takes Android 2.2 (Froyo) as a minimum requirement. No chance for existing Android 2.1 or below to enjoy Flash 10.1 for the time being. Now it all depends on respective handset manufacturers to release an update for Android 2.2 when it is officially revealed.

Google wants to tie up Nexus One with telcos, plan to cease online sales

Posted:  May 15, 2010   By: soyacincau   2 comments

Google has announced on its blog that it will revamp the way they sell the Nexus One.  As of now,  Nexus One is generally offered online on Google’s website to 4 countries, namely UK, USA, HK and Singapore. Retail wise, it is only available in very selected operators.

We’ve tried the Google Nexus One ourselves and we admit that it is one of the better Android phones out there. However getting a Nexus One isn’t as easy as other Android offerings from Motorola, Sony Ericsson and HTC. The difference here is obviously due to lack of sales channels to distribute Nexus One especially on the retail front.

Video: Flash running on Nexus One with Android 2.2

Despite what Steve Jobs and Adobe had been arguing about Flash support, the upcoming Android 2.2 (Froyo) is set to support Flash 10.1. We didn’t have great expectations of running flash on such a tiny device but this video has changed our mind.

Surprisingly, Flash run extremely well and it looks very fluid like how you would normally see on desktops. Pretty damn good we would say. Check out the video after the jump

Quake III on Nexus One

Cool! Quake III running on a Nexus One. What’s more fascinating is that the game is controlled solely from the trackball and volume buttons The gameplay looks pretty decent despite the absence of a AWSD keys required for such a game.
