While the Government and telcos are busy imposing taxes on prepaid packs and reloads, what are they doing to protect subscribers from scammers like this one.
These vermin are getting creative with the way they bait unsuspecting subscribers and its easy to fall into their trap if you’re not careful.
Don’t fall victim to such scams, following the instructions on the such messages will allow these companies to send more text messages to your mobile number and charge you ridiculous amounts of money for receiving them. Worst of all, it’s almost impossible for an unknowing subscriber to unsubscribe to the service.
Best to ignore such SMS and submit a formal complaint to MCMC and your service provider. At the same time the regulators and the industry are not doing enough to eliminate these scams. It’s disturbing to see that such scams are still running rampant.

Celcom puts out a notice on its website to warn its subscribers of an SMS scam doing its rounds using the telco’s brand name.
The unsolicited text messages, Celcom says, promise rewards and cash prizes.
Celcom reminds customers to ignore any SMS that promise big rewards and cash prizes. Celcom also says its subscribers should be cautious of SMSes that claim they are from Celcom but do not bare 12302 shortcode.
As always, we can’t stress to you enough to stay away from all this crap. Be carefull, always.
Samples of the scrupulous SMSes after the jump.

The SMS we received from 66300 reads:
Priviledged offer, Google Nexus Phone for only RM215.67/mth on UOB 12 mths 0% IPP. Valid till 30 April 2010. T&C apply. For details call 0323003388.
another variation read:
SMS promo: Google Nexus Phone for only RM215.67/mth on UOB 12 mths 0% IPP details call 0323003388
There’s a thread on LowYat.Net forums about this offer as well.
When we first saw this we thought – “this can’t be true”.
A quick call to UOB customer service 03 2612 8121 revealed that our suspicion was warranted.
The SMS is not true and don’t be fooled. You could end up with a very hefty credit card bill rather than a Nexus One.

We received this SMS today.
The SMS reads:
From: +60128696996
Message:
From SHELL Tahniah!Anda tlhMe”nangi Kontes SHELL
2,3 Million. Sila Hub Talian: 0128233122Terima
Kasih. Penghantar: Shell.
Just from the formatting and the way the message read we know that this is a scam. But we also know that there is a contest currently running organised by Shell and Bonuslink
So to be doubly sure we wrote an email to Shell and this is what they have to say (produced in verbatim, of course).
