iPhone HD/4G: More specs revealed

Posted:  May 17, 2010   By: ccsoya   1 comment

June’s coming hard and fast but it’s not coming soon enough.

Although we’re still weeks away from the much speculated launch of the 4th generation iPhone, thanks to the many leaks and insider views, we now have a pretty good picture of what we can expect come this 7 June.

The latest set of specs revealed by an analyst from Digitimes indicates that the latest iPhone could be set to launch with a print magazine quality 960 x 640 display with a combination of both in-plane switching (IPS) and fringe-field switching (FFS) technology, plus a healthy 512MB of RAM.

If this is to be true then we can be pretty sure that the new iPhone will have one of the most advanced displays for a smartphone device. As it stands the highest resolution Android smartphone is churning a much lower 854 x 480 (Motorola Droid/Milestone and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10).

Already, tests have revealed that the current crop iPhone 3GS has an industry leading touchscreen. IPS is the technology used in the new iMac and iPad, FFS in the HTC Legend, and both help increase viewing angles and display quality by some margin. The report notes that LG Display and Prime View International will be supplying the displays.

On top of that, to boost battery life, the iPhone HD/4G display will be 33% thinner compared to the 3GS to accomodate a bigger battery module.

Digitimes also revealed that the the iPhone HD/4G will not run run the multicore Cortex A9 architecture but instead Apple will stick with the ARM Cortex A8 currently found in the iPhone 3GS and iPd A4 SoC, but they’ll be doubling the RAM to 512MB which should be especially useful to accomodate the multitasking feature supported on the iPhone OS 4.

The 512MB RAM reported in Digitimes does conflict with the 256MB RAM speculated earlier based on the now infamous lost/stolen iPhone prototypes. But nothing is definitive yet.

The report also says the Foxconn will ship 24 million of the iPhone HD/4G starting from June. Specifically, an initial shipment of 4.5 million units will go out at launch and an additional 19.5 million units will ship for the rest of 2010.

DiGi offering Micro SIM

Posted:  May 17, 2010   By: ccsoya   5 comments

UPDATE: DiGi officially offers Micro SIM, read about it here.

DiGi‘s currently running a poll on facebook on whether the should offer micro SIM for prepaid or postpaid.

We think whatever the result is, postpaid or prepaid, the poll is purely academic because at the end of the day DiGi will introduce micro SIMs and they will offer it for both postpaid and prepaid plans eventually.

The more pertinent question right now is whether DiGi will bring in the iPhone HD/4G and the iPad 3G.

The jury’s still out on that but we’re pretty sure that the introduction of Micro SIMs into the local market from two telcos carrying the iPhone is not merely a ploy to “welcome” iPad 3G early adopters. It could very well mean alot more than that.

DiGi’s Bola! Bola! Bola! campaign

Posted:  May 17, 2010   By: ccsoya   2 comments

DiGi‘s running a football themed promo campaign in what we believe is a “ride the wave” effort to the run up for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The promo consists of contest that offers free SMS and trips to any football match in the world as prizes. DiGi’s also offering special edition prepaid top-up cards along with some paid content services revolving around football updates based on SMS and MMS with news alerts, caller tunes and fantasy football availabe for purchase.

That’s all pretty standard stuff. What’s interesting is the viral video campaign that’s accompanying the Bola! Bola! Bola! promo. It’s a series of 24-styled short episodes on YouTube around a misterious yellow ball and what’s inside it. Currently at its third installment, we can’t really make what it’s all about.

When it comes to viral campaigns, DiGi’s a pro. We even have a sneaky feeling that DiGi is also behind the ThePackcik.com but we can’t confirm this for now. In the meantime we’re keeping a close eye on how its “What’s inside the yellow ball?” campaign will unfold. It’s definitely an interesting watch.

Check out all three videos after the jump.

Not sure if you guys had a chance to catch one of the latest episode of 24 (season 8 episode 21). If you haven’t, it’s now available over the net, if you know where to look for it.

What’s interesting about this episode is how WiMAX saved the day. If it weren’t for Sprint’s 3G/4G Overdrive providing a more secure alternative connection over the military grade ECHELON network.

Eat your heart out LTE!

Resistance is futile: iPad app make yours look like Captain Picard’s PADD

Got an iPad? Yeah you’re pretty cool, whipping that out at Starbucks and casually reading with a side of latte.

This app is going to make you 1000 times cooler.

It’s called “Captain’s Log” and it’ll skin your iPad to look like Captain Jean Luc Picard‘s very own touch screen tablet on the USS Enterprise called a PADD – Personal Access Display Device.

By the looks of it, the app will probably bring down your iPad’s functionality a notch as your controls are limited to email, Twitter, Facebook and probably not much else but man, is it cool.
